The purpose of
youth work in West Lothian is to support young people aged
10 to 25 years to help develop their potential both as
individuals and as a member of the community by:
- Building self esteem
and self confidence
- Developing the ability
to manage personal and social relationships
- Creating learning and
developing new skills
- Encouraging positive
group atmospheres
- Building the capacity
of young people to consider risk, make reasoned
decisions and take control
- developing a world
view which widens horizons and invites social commitment
The services' work with
young people is concerned with providing activities within
safe settings based on experimental learning, participation
in decision making and confidence building.
Its aim is to provide a
range of opportunities which will aid the young people's
personal and social development. The service also supports
the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Youth Achievement Awards
and West Lothian Young Scot. The core activities are:
- mainstream club and
holiday play provision
- issue based work,
including international and health and wellbeing related
work
- youth participation
and youth information
- young people and
community safety
- accreditation of young
people's learning
- support to voluntary
sector
- addressing issues for
young people in the context of 16+ learning choices
which prevent their participation in education, work or
training
- youth literacy
